A last-minute strike from Jude Bellingham sealed the El Clásico in favour of Real Madrid.
Barcelona started the game on the front foot, dictating the tempo and dominating possession. Carlo Ancelotti’s men found it hard to cope with the Barca press as the 4-1-3-2 formation with Toni Kroos as a potential LM wasn’t working against a more robust opponent.
It was Ilkay Gundogan who opened the scoring in favour of the hosts with the fastest Clásico goal since 2014 in six minutes when David Alaba’s attempted interception rebounded the ball perfectly in the goalscoring line for the German and he made no mistake from close range. It was the 33-year-old’s first goal in Blaugrana colours and indeed in a memorable fixture to make his mark.
Real Madrid failed to counter in the first half but they started the second half with much vigour and positive intent. The game changed when Eduardo Camavinga and Luka Modric took the field. Los Blancos started creating more chances and finally, the equaliser came in the 69th minute when new signing Jude Bellingham slotted home from outside the box.
Xavi’s men couldn’t repeat their performance from the first 45 minutes but they did attempt to snatch a potential winner late on when it was all about end-to-end action. Real Madrid prevailed in the last minute of added time when Bellingham popped up again to a Dani Carvajal cross, netting it and completing his brace.
With this win, Real Madrid go level on points at the top of the La Liga table with Girona and four points clear of FC Barcelona.
